History: The zoo was opend on 24th March 1932 by the city and Gustav Moog. Moog had the time from 1 March 30 September to show that a zoo would be a success or the City would not aprove of it. All ready the 10th July 1932 visitor number 100.000 came! The first animals shown, which Moog borrowed from other zoos, were yaks, Arabian camels, different goat and sheep species, llamas, donkeys, zebu cattle, collared-mangabey, crab-eating macaque, raccoons and domestic birds. The following year the high light was a lion show. 1934 was the beginning of a building periode, starting with a penguin enclosure, 1935 rocky enclosures for bears, 1936 a monkey house, 1937 a carnivore house and 1938 a show house (the year late the zoos first elephant moved to this house, befor it was send to Dresden). 1935 Hitler was elected and so the zoo became a part of the german front line. 1939 the city was evacuated and so was its animals, except the large animals - they were shot. Moog and his animals moved to the Berlin Zoo. Moog stayed in Berlin to 1943 and from then he moved to Mulhouse in Alsace/France. After world war 2 and to 1948 he was a war prissonor of France. Returning to Saarbrücken Moog wanted to rebuild the zoo, but the old place was not an option. Instead he therefor was thinking of an former quarry. The city agreed the 25th November 1949 and easter 1950 it was opened at the place you find it today. Eagle owls parots and rhesus macaques where among the first animals. The zoo did not hove any heated house so tropical monkeys had to be kept above a store house. The animals then where on show for an extra fee. After a few years the zoo got the Tropicarium. In 1965 the first lions arrived. Since the 1 April 1955 the zoo is a department of the city. The following years the zoo expanded, this was stoped by a city block build in the 1960s. Though in 1971 the zoo was extendet a bit. Since the zoo had a long time of neglection and 2010 it had to sell 3 hectare. Since 2008 though it follows a master plan so that the cheetahs, seals and mandrills got a new enclosure. 2013 the gorillas got a new enclosure.
